TEACHING
AND TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION TIPS:
1) GET CREATIVE AND INVENTIVE THROUGH PLAY!
- “All sorts of things can happen when
you’re open to new ideas and playing around with things.” - A quote from
Stephanie Kwolek, inventor of Kevlar. Formulate means to plan, make, build, come
up with, invent. Exercise your creative side with this web site exploring
what it takes to unleash innovations and inventions. Don't miss the Inventor's
Playhouse.
Invention at Play includes an excellent educator manual, inventor's stories,
and actual inventor's sketches of developing products or processes.
2) SPACE DAY DESIGN CHALLENGE- Space
is on everyone's mind this week due to the Columbia Space Shuttle Crash. In
honor of the lost astronauts, have some discussions about the value of space
exploration. Space Day is May 1, 2003. Students can formulate designs
as they enter the Space Day Design Challenge with projects due March 3,
2003. The challenges include :designing the aircraft of the future, design
a model spacecraft for Earth and other planets, design an aircraft that uses
alternative energy. ***These are excellent group projects as well as
gifted enrichment. Check out the website and other Space Day activities at
Space Day Design
Challenge
3) FORMULATE SOME MATH EQUATIONS-
check out some awesome interactive math activities at
Explore Math. A "WOW" site, but you need Shockwave on your computer to
run the activities. For high school, middle school, possibly some
intermediate applications. Interactive activities which allow students to
manipulate points on a plane, graph linear equalities, and investigate area
probability by making predictions, and throwing "darts" at a
target! Another benefit is a "math news service" which
highlights news stories involving math in the real world. You'll want to
bookmark the site! (To get the lesson plans, it is a free registration) ExploreMath
For younger math explorations
(Intermediate to primary) and formulations try this compilation of
excellent, interactive sites: King's
List of Online Math Activities
4) FOLLOW THE COLUMBIA CRASH INVESTIGATION: Follow the
NASA investigation on CNN
Student News. This site has an article to read and a list of
discussion questions. Pay attention especially to #2. Focus on the
scientific process the NASA scientists will go through as they gather
information, analyze, evaluate, infer, and formulate a plan to
prevent another tragedy. Also, students had designed experiments conducted
on this mission including the effect of anti-gravity on an ant farm.
Formulate experiments that can be conducted on future missions.
5) FORMULATE A
BUDGET- Financial
planning is made of three steps:What do you want? What
do you have? How do you get what you want? Experience real-world budgeting
with Moneyoplis, a very
popular, free online simulation.
6) Online Dictionaries-
Look up the word on online dictionaries as a whole class activity to introduce
and brainstorm ideas and activities about the word. Use the PC to TV device or
other projection system if possible. Here are some good online
dictionaries:
-Miriam Webster
seems to be the easiest and most concise http://www.m-w.com/home.htm
-Your Dictionary.com

Similar to above
-Wordsmyth http://www.wordsmyth.net/live/home.php
This one is interesting... when you click on the word to see the definitions,
more sections automatically appear, which could give ideas for instruction or
activities - such as synonyms, similar words, examples in a sentence, etc.
