Ideas for Getting Started

Students practice basic Word skills with the following...

bulletShort poems - here the children could type a poem that he/she created or one that the class has learned in class. They could then Insert a picture from Clip Art that goes along with the poem. Another thing you could do with this is let the children create their own illustrations through Paint.
bulletSpelling words - the students can practice Word skills by using their weekly word list and write numbered sentences with the words. Click here to see another idea for your Spelling Words.
bulletContent vocabulary- the students can practice typing their Social Studies or Science terms. You could ask them to put the terms into to a simple table with specific columns and rows.
bulletWriting Portfolio Pieces - Using Word early in the writing process helps eliminate so much stress on the teachers and students. This also helps children learn how and where to save and retrieve their documents.
bulletABC Books - this can be done for the younger students. You could also expand this idea. Click here to see one that was done by another teacher.
bulletTeacher Directory Book - this can be done by very young children or even the older ones. Children would use the digital camera to take pictures of the teachers and staff at your school. Then use Word to design the layout of the pages for the directory.
bulletWord Processing-Based Activities for a Language Arts Class - this page contains a list of ideas for children of all ages.
bulletWord Processing Activities - this is a list of lessons that the children can work on right there. It may be more appropriate for older students as the assignments are quite lengthy.
bulletOh My Word - This is a link from Mrs. Cannon's web page, which is a wonderful site. Here you will find 12 lessons on Microsoft Word Tool bars and buttons.  At the end of the lessons/activities there is a quiz.
